Umami taste

  Japanese for "Pleasant Savory Taste"

Umami is one of the five basic tastes, along with sweetness, sourness, bitterness, and saltiness, it enhances the palatability of a wide variety of foods.

Many common foods are rich in umami taste, because it is present naturally in fish, seafood, sea vegetables, meats, vegetables, cheeses and pastas.

People taste umami through receptors specific to glutamate and it is usually associated with food that is healthy or nutritious. Our FRESH sea vegetables, Aonori and Sea Lettuce, have a MILD Umami taste and can be used as an ingredient in any dish.

How Algal Tech's 

Aonori and Sea Lettuce are grown

Algal Tech’s Aonori and Sea Lettuce are grown using a unique patent pending aeroponic system. Aeroponics is the process of growing plants (in this case marine) in an air environment, without the use of soil, with a direct supply of essential nutrients using a fertilized (sea) water spray, which also provides them with the CO2 they need to grow.

 

Through a scientific understanding of the physiology of algae and extensive scientific and engineering collaboration, Algal Tech has gained significant advantages over the competition, especially compared to the harvest of wild seaweeds and aquatic cultures (algae floating in water at sea or in inland ponds). These advantages are:

  • Greater control of the nutritional properties of the algae.

  • Greater consistency in quality and nutritional composition.

  • Reliable production volumes during the culture period (10 months / yr).

  • Growing in greenhouses prevents algae contamination by insects, bacteria and dust.
